Kumbha means a pitcher and Mela means fair in Sanskrit. Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred river. Kumbh Mela believed to be the largest religious gathering on earth is held every 12 years on the banks of the `Sangam`- the confluence of the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. It is held every third year at one of the four places by rotation: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayaga), Nashik and Ujjain. The one celebrated at the Holy Sangam in Allahabad is the largest and holiest of them.
